G.1159 Gulfstream IV - Royal Netherlands Air Force

The Gulfstream G IV is in use with the Royal Netherlands Air Force since April 1st 1996. Due to the changed employment of the Air Force the need raised for a medium classed business jet to transport civil and military authorities over large distances.

The Gulfstream IV is a significantly improved, larger, longer ranging and advanced development of the earlier II and III. The most significant improvement with the G-IV over the earlier Gulfstream models are the Rolls-Royce Tay turbofans, which bring significant fuel burn and noise emission improvements despite their higher thrust output than the II and III's Speys (the IV continues a Gulfstream and Rolls-Royce association that dates back to the original Dart powered Gulfstream I).

Other changes include a stretched fuselage and aerodynamically and structurally improved wing with 30% fewer parts, greater fuel capacity and range, increased span tailplane and an advanced EFIS avionics suite with six colour CRT displays.

All this led to the decision to buy the G IV for the RNLAF. The flexibility, safety record and range (max. 7.700 km) all contributed to this. The Gulfstream was acquired from the second hand market in December 2005. Some modifications in radio and navigational equipment was made before delivery.

The Gulfstream operates from Eindhoven where it resides with 334 Squadron that also operates the Fokker F50, DC-10 Transport and KDC-10 Tanker/Transport planes.
