VC10 - Royal Air Force

The Vickers VC-10 airliner was built by Vickers Armstrong (aircraft) Ltd and first flew on 29th June 1962. The airliner was designed to operate long distance routes at high subsonic speeds and be capable of hot and high operations.

The aircraft was in production from 1962 to 1970 with 54 airframes being produced in total. It served with numerous world airlines.

In 1960, the RAF issued Specifiaction 239 for a strategic transport aircraft, this resulted in the MoD placing an order with Vickers for five VC-10s. This was later increased to fourteen airframes. They had serial numbers XR806 to XR810 and XV101 to XV109. Designated the VC-10 C Mk.1, the first aircraft was delivered to 10 Squadron, RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, during 1966.

In 1978, the RAF contracted British Aerospace to convert five ex-BOAC (via Gulf Air) and four ex-East Africa Airways airframes as air-to-air tankers. These were known in service as the VC-10 K2 (serials ZA140 to ZA144) and the VC-10 K3 (serials ZA147 to ZA150). The K2 variant has since been retired from service and scrapped with the final one being retired during 2000.

In 1981, fourteen ex-British Airways Super VC-10s were purchased and allocated the serials ZD230 to ZD243. These were placed in storage at RAF Abingdon in Oxfordshire. During the early 1990s, five of the best airframes were selected for conversion to VC-10 K4 tankers with the others being stripped for spares and eventually scrapped. During this time the surviving VC-10 C Mk.1s were modified as tankers and were re-designated as the VC-10 C1K.

Number 10 Squadron disbanded on 14th October 2005 leaving 101 Squadron the sole operator of the type at RAF Brize Norton along with 1312 Flight at RAF Mount Pleasant, Falkland Islands.

The VC-10 has a destinguished war career, serving in the Gulf War, Southern and Northern Watch operations, Operation Allied Force (Kosovo), Operation Desert Fox (Afghanistan) and the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

The remaining VC-10 and Tristar tankers are due to be replaced in RAF service by the Airbus A330 MRTT (Multi-role Tanker Transporter) under the Future Tanker Aircraft Project, with the first due in service during 2011.
