The Tornado is a two-seat multi-role combat aircraft which was developed and manufactured by the United Kingdom, Italy and Germany and introduced into the German Air Force and Navy from 1981 onwards. Developed and built by Panavia, a tri-national consortium consisting of British Aerospace (previously British Aircraft Corporation), MBB of West Germany, and Alenia Aeronautica of Italy, the Tornado first flew on August 14, 1974, and saw action with the RAF and AMI (Italian Air Force) in the Gulf War. International co-operation continued after its entry into service within the Tri-National Tornado Training Establishment, a tri-nation training and evaluation unit operating from RAF Cottesmore, England. Including all variants, 992 aircraft were built for the three partner nations and Saudi Arabia. With a total of 290 ordered, Germany was the biggest operator of the type.
Currently three Geschwaders are equipped with Tornados; AG 51 operates the Tornado IDS in the reconnaissance role, JBG 33 operates the Tornado IDS as Fighter/Bomber and JBG 32 who operates the Tornados ECR, optimized for the location and engagement of radar systems. Within the scope of the transformation of the Bundeswehr, the German Air Force also took over the task of anti surface air operations from the German Navy in 2005. As a result, all German Navy Tornados were transferred to the German Air Force. The overall flight hours performed by all Tornado aircraft add up to approximately 1.030.000. |
