Eskadrille (Squadron) 730 was established on January 1, 1954 at Flyvestation Karup. In September 1954 it had been equipped with the newly acquired F-84G Thunderjet and moved to Skrydstrup in Jutland where it, apart from a brief period at Karup from 1959 to 1961, is based ever since. During the first years whilst flying the F-84G Thunderjet the unit lost no less then 10 fighters in accidents, including some fatalities. But it was also the period when the unit got famous nickname; "Birdsong", a direct translation of the equally famous local beer brand "Fuglsang" which is brewed in Haderslev. And the foundation was laid for many proud traditions that remain until this very day. In 1961, the Thunderjet was replaced with the North American F-100 Super Sabre, wich was to serve the squadron for the next 20 years. The F-100 was used in the ground attack role and received many upgrades including a new Doppler-based navigation system and a new purpose-display, and the squadron began to excel in precision bombing. In 1984, the unit participated for the first time in the famous Red Flag excercise, being the first time for Danish fighters to be deployed to the other side of the Atlantic. This has since been a regular recurring event, and allowed the squadron experience with large scale out of theatre deployments. This experience was further enhanced with the introduction of air-to-air refueling with the use of USAF KC-135 and KC-10 tankers. This ability to deploy the squadron quickly and over great distances was vital when the unit joined NATO's Immediate and Rapid Reaction Force (IRF and RRF). 730 Eskadrille participated in Operation Allied Force in the Balkans and Operation Enduring Freedom over the skies of Afghanistan. Apart from these well known NATO operations, the unit also provides the Air Policing role with sister unit 727 Eskadrille, not only for Danish Airspace, but also as part of the NATO Air Policing tasks in the Baltic and Iceland. |
