Hot Blade 2013

Report by Vincent Loedeman

Hot Blade 2013 was held from July 17th-31st of July at Ovar Air Base in Portugal near the city of Porto. This years Hot Blade exercise was the second edition organized by the European Defence Agency in cooperation with the Portuguese Air Force. Touchdown Aviation was present at Ovar Air Base and took the opportunity to photograph the participants.

During Hot Blade 2013 several types of missions were flown like Air Assaults, Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) and Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC). In the beginning of the exercise small missions were flown to understand each participant’s operation procedures and how they operated with their helicopter or fixed wing aircraft. After each day the exercise was getting more complex and difficult to train the aircrews to fly together in big operation and formation in hot and dusty environment.
This included cooperation with ground forces which also were from different nations.

This year, five countries participated in the exercise with a total of 26 helicopters and seven fixed wing aircraft. The Host Nation Portugal participated with EH101 Merlin helicopters and F-16’s fighters to provide Close Air Support (CAS) during several missions. Also the Austrian Air Force was present at Hot Blade 2013, they send 3 Bell212 helicopters and three Kiowa of which one of the latter was painted in a splendid color scheme. The Belgium Air Component brought 6 Augusta 109’s Hirundo’s to Portugal, the German Army participated with 8 UH-1 Iroquois from Transport Helicopter Regiment 30 from Niederstetten.

The Royal Netherlands Air Force was present with 3 CH-47D Chinooks and one of their brand new CH-47F Chinook. It was the first time that the RNLAF was flying in a multi-national exercise with their CH-47F after the first one was delivered last year. It also was the first time it was flying in such a warm and dusty environment. The RNLAF also send one AS532U2 Cougar from 300 Squadron to Ovar and from the Royal Netherlands Army the 11th Air Mobile Brigade supported with ground troops.

During Hot Blade 2013 there were 324 sorties flown and 946,42 flying hours where made in the exercise.  Touchdown Aviation would like to thank all personal from all country's for their great hospitality.
