US Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C.

Report by Alex van der Goot

The USCG organization is divided into two main areas, the Pacific and the Atlantic area. In total there are 9 districts reaching all the way form Maine to Alaska and Hawaii. USCG Air Station Elizabeth City is located in North Carolina and is part of the 5th district of the US Coast Guard.

Air Station Elizabeth City was commissioned in 1940, by that time equipped with 10 aircraft and only 4 officers and 52 enlisted airmen. The station was under US Navy control during WWII and tasked with SAR (Search and Rescue), Anti-submarine and training missions. Nowadays E-city houses the USCG Air Station, Aircraft Repair and Supply Center (AR&SC), Aviation Technical Training Center (ATTC), Support Center, and Boat Station Elizabeth City.

During may 2012, we were hosted by the Air Station to take a look at the operations at the base. E-city operates two types of aircraft. The multi role C-130J model Hercules and the newly re-designated MH-60T Jayhawk helicopters. Both aircraft are tasked with several missions, all in order to safeguard the nations maritime interests. The main tasks of the USCG Elizabeth City are:

  • SAR (Search and Rescue)
  • Ice Patrol
  • Law Enforcement
  • Protecting the environment
  • Homeland Security

To accomplish their tasks, the aircraft are equipped with infrared radars (FLIR), Night Vision Goggles (NVG), chem-bio and radiological environmental hazard detection and defense mechanisms, Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), Electronics suite of command, control, communication, computers, intelligence, surveillance & reconnaissance equipment. The C-130J models are even equipped with HUD (Heads Up Display) allowing the pilots to keep their eyes out of the cockpit and still being able to read out the most important data in their line of sight.

The USCG airborne fleet is equipped with very modern equipment necessary for accomplishing their outstanding work. Rumour has it that the USCG will be transferring their 6x C-130J’s to the US Air Force, replacing this high asset with the newer built but smaller C-27J Spartan Transport plane. Time will tell, as no decision has been made as of yet.

We would like to thank the USCG personnel for their hospitality during our very pleasant stay at the Air Station. Special thanks goes to Lt Peña for arranging all the necessary for our visit. We would be more than happy to be back with the USCG again in the future to report on the AR&SC, the ATTC and try to catch a launch of a mission too!

We salute the dedicated men and women of Air Station Elizabeth City who are doing excellent jobs to uphold the Coast Guards motto: Semper Paratus (Always Ready).
