RAF Northolt Night Photoshoot VII

Text and photography by Stuart Freer, additional images Mike Freer.

The seventh Northolt night photoshoot was held in perfect weather conditions, unlike the previous one back in March which was held in monsoon conditions upon arrival. This particular photoshoot was very well attended with over two hundred photographers, which will help greatly for funding for the restoration of the Battle of Britain Sector Operations Room at RAF Northolt, in the Battle's 70th Anniversary year.

Aircraft attendance was down on previous events with a number of cancellations. An RAF Dominie T1 and Beech King Air from RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire were forced to cancel due to unsevicability and tasking. The French Securite Civile with their Bombardier CL-415's and Grumman S-2T Tracker's have been asked on a number of occasions to attend a night shoot. Alas, it was not to be again. You've got to admire organiser Phil Dawe's dedication in trying to get these rare types to our shores.

A very welcome addition was a Jetstream T2 from 750 Naval Air Squadron based at RNAS Culdrose in Cornwall looked immaculate under the flood lights. After 32 years of service this will probably be the last time the aircraft will be seen at an event, as they are being replaced by the Beech King Air come the end of the year.

The resident 32(TR) Squadron was on show with a BAE 125 CC3 in anniversary markings for celebrating 125 years of the SSAFA (Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association), the organisation supports the British armed forces.

Also appearing in anniversary markings were a couple of Hawk T1's from 19(R) Squadron at RAF Valley in Anglesey. The squadron is celebrating its 95th Anniversary carrying a special emblem on the fuselage & a large 95th on the tail. The DHFS (Defence Helicoptor Flying School) from RAF Shawbury in Shropshire sent a Squirrel HT1, sadly a Agusta A109E from the same unit was invited but was unable to attend.

So summing up the seventh Northolt Night Photoshoot, aircraft participation was down, but it's quality over quantity. Where else in the U.K can you get on to an operational ramp at night to shoot military aircraft?

The author wishes to thank Mr Phillip Dawe and Group Captain Tom Barrett for their kind hospitality during our visit.
