Concluding the celebrations of the 100th Anniversary of the Fleet Air Arm RAF Shawbury in the county of Shropshire was chosen as the forwarding operating airfield to house aircraft for the flypast over HMS llustrious which was docked in Liverpool for a weekend of celebrations.

RAF Shawbury's station commander invited enthusiasts onto the base to view the aircraft at close quarters for a small fee of ten pounds, all proceeds to go to the excellent charity 'Help the Heros'. Over a hundred photographers and enthusiasts were given the chance to view all of the visting aircraft on there adjacient ramps before they departed for Liverpool.

The aircraft taking part in the flypast were a mixture of rotary and fixed wing aircraft. The rotary section comprised of Sea King HU5's from 771 NAS (Naval Air Squadron), Sea King ASaC7's from 849 NAS all based at Naval Air Station Culdrose. Sea King HC4's from 846 NAS based at Naval Air Station Yeovilton. A mixture of Lynx variants also from Yeovilton, including an example from the Royal Marines and lastly the heavy weights of the FAA; four Merlin HM1's from 824 NAS.

The fixed wing section was a mixture of current and historical types. A very welcome addition to the flypast was Kennet Aviation's immaculate Supermarine Seafire F Mk XVII G-KASX, completing the historic section was a De Havilland Chipmunk T10 from the Royal Navy Historic Flight based at NAS Yeovilton, due to a number of maintenance issues, the other RNHF aircraft didn't see any action this year of celebrations.

Current types comprised of the Slingsby T-67M Firefly from 703 NAS based at RAF Barkston Heath with four present. Two Grob Tutor T1's from 727 NAS from RNAS Yeovilton and lastly the venarable Jetsteam T2 of 750 NAS from RNAS Culdrose. The Jetstreams will shortly be retired after thirty years service in the Fleet Air Arm, to be replaced by the Beech 200 King Air.

A fitting finale to a very proud and historic Fleet Air Arm that will see an exciting start of the second century with new aircraft carriers and fighters entering service.

The author wishes to thank the Station Commander and all the staff at RAF Shawbury for making this photo-shoot possible.
