Koksijde Air Show 2006

The weekend of July the 3rd and 4th saw two Air Shows relatively close to eachother; Cambrai and Koksijde. Koksijde was the first to be attended. Being home to the Belgian Defense - Air Component Search and Resque assets in the form of the well known Sea King and the Alouette III.

This year the Sea King has in 30th anniversary in Belgian Service as a replacement of the Sikorsky S-58. During this years of service the Sea King has made 2.300 scrambles and saved 1338 people. For this achievement a 24 hours, 7 days a week readiness is required by two of the unit`s Sea Kings. Between 08:00 and 20:00 one is on a 15 minute and a second on 45 minute standby. After 20:00 the response times drop to 45 minutes, but often this time is reduced to 50% by the unit.

Next to this anniversary the Alouette III also has is own milestone this year, namely 35 years of service. The main task of the venerable Alouette is logistic support to the navy vessels and liaison flights between ships and ship to shore. Second to this the Alouette also has a SAR task complementary to the Sea Kings.

In the near future both types will be replaced by the NH-90 of wich an order has been placed in 2006.

Well known for it`s solo display in the European Air Show Scene and even more important very well known to many pilots who gained their wings on the trainer during it`s long career, 2006 will mark the end of operations to the Fouga.

With the withdrawal of the fouga in 2006 a well know sound and a famous low (and that is real low!!) departure from the solo display will cease to exist. But before it is that far the season will be flown on some occasions with the two Fouga`s painted in the once famous Red Devil colorscheme as it flew in way back in the 1960s in the Red Devil Demo Team.
