Belgium Defence days 2006Words and photographs Remco Donselaar On September 2nd and 3rd, 2006 Beauvechain Airbase hosted the 5th Belgium Defence days. These days are organised by the different Belgium Armed Forces to show the people their material, tasks and coorporation. It's also an opportunity to recruit young people. Beauvechain is one of the largest Airbases in Belgium and is situated south east of Brussels. The 1st Wing is based here and consist of the 5th Smaldeel, wich is equipped with the Marchetti for the basic flying training; and the 7th Smaldeel who operates the Fouga Magister. The show was devided in a morning and afternoon programme and started with a flypast of six Belgium Alpha Jets. The morning flying programme was not very spectaculair, but did show the only sunshine of the whole weekend. During the displays of the Dakota and Harvard, wich represented the celebration of 60 years Belgium Air Force, I was transferred to a nice spot close to the runway. Therefore I also unfortunally missed the Fouga dual display. For the afternoon displays however this was a very good spot. The afternoon started with a joint demo of the Air and Land component. Two F-16's gave Close Air Support (CAS) while two Hercules transport aircraft unloaded some ground troops. Later in the demonstration a MEDEVAC was showed by an A-109. Other demostrations came from two display teams; Patrulla Aquila and Patrouille de France. A special attraction was a race over 1000 meters between a motor, Dodge Viper and the Solo Display F-16. The F-16 won the race in 17 seconds! Paul Rorrive showed once again his ultra low take off in the Fouga Magister. Stars of the static show were two Turkish Phantoms with their crew. They treated dry apricots to the public! Other nice participants were 2 Portuguese Epsilons. The local museum showed some exhibits like a Mirage 5 and a restored Starfighter. The Belgium Armed forces succeeded in presenting the public a diverse show, too bad the weather wouldn't cooperate. The author would like to thank the Public Affairs of Beauvechain Airbase for their hospitality during the day. |
