The F-16 is in use for over 25 years with the KLu (Koninklijke Luchtmacht) now. It entered service in 1979 to replace the F-104 and later on the NF-5 in service with the KLu. In total 9 Squadrons were equipped with the F-16 (306, 311, 312, 313, 314, 315, 316, 322 and 323 Sqn). Today 6 Sqns (306, 311, 312, 313, 322 and 323 Sqn) are remaining and are being clustered on two MOB's (Main Operating Base) Volkel and Leeuwarden with Twente closing down in 2006. The F-16 is updated with the Mid Life Update and is currently in test for the M5 updates that include new helmets, weaponry etc. The F-16 will be replaced by the F-23 Joint Strike Fighter from 2014 onwards. The F-16 solodisplay has become a well know Air Show contribution in the European Air Show scene. With special paint applied to make it even more attractive it must, together with the USAF Thunderbirds, be the most photographed F-16 in worldwide service today. The honor of providing the solodisplay for the 2005/2006 season is given to Volkel AB, all based squadrons provide staff and/or equipment, so it is real teamwork! Captain Gert-Jan "Goofy" Vooren is the display pilot for both seasons. |
