Royal International Air Tattoo 2016

For most aviation enthusiastís the Royal International Air Tattoo is the highlight of there calendar year. With an announcement in early January from Lockheed-Martin that the F-35 Lightning II would finally make its debut at an airshow outside of the United States. Many will of course remember that this was scheduled to happen back in 2014. So would we finally see the type for the first time on UK shores.

Back in January 2015, in a debate with local residents from Volkel Air Base, Minister of Defence Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert announced her commitment to send a F-35 Lightning II to the Netherlands for so called noise perception flights. One year of planning later the flights took place at the end of May 2016. Touchdown Aviation spoke to Col. Albert de Smit, detachment commander, to hear all about the objectives and planning of the deployment.

Nato Tiger Meet 2016

From Monday 16th till Friday 27th of May 2016 the 15 Wing (ALA 15) at Zaragoza Air Base in the north east of Spain was host to the annual NATO Tiger Meet. The 2016 meet was attended by no less then 19 NATO Tiger Association (NTA) members and two visiting units. Touchdown Aviation was present on Friday 20th during the Media day organised by the base.

From April 11th - 22nd Leeuwarden Air Base, the Netherlands was host to the annual Frisian Flag exercise. Organised by 322 Squadron, but with support from various units within the RNLAF, and seven participating nations it is the largest NATO exercise in Western Europe this year. Touchdown Aviation visited the media day on April 12th and found out that the demand for such exercises is still high.

The Belgian Air Component (BAC) has a strong history in organising excellent events for aviation photographers. Tuesday April 5th 2016 the BAC combined a recruitment day for the Belgian Forces with a sunset and night photography shoot for a select group of photographers at 1 Wing, Beauvechain Airbase. Touchdown Aviation was on scene and we will show you a view through our lenses during this evening of shooting out in the wild.
