Axalp Fliegerschiessen 2015
Seven years after Touchdown Aviation's first visit to Axalp Fliegerschiessen, it was time to go back to the annual live fire demonstration of the Swiss Air Force. The event heavily depends on weather circumstances; two years ago the author had climbed to the top only to hear the event was cancelled both days. This year the event was planned for October 7th & 8th.
Royal International Air Tattoo 2015
The Royal International Air Tattoo is the biggest military aviation air show in the world and this year saw the official commemorations by the Royal Air Force for the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain at RAF Fairford. This was also linked into the main operational theme “Securing the Skies: Past, Present and Future.”
Flying with the 100th ARW
It's 5am on a dreary Monday morning more likening to a day in November rather than early July. I was asked to meet at the main gate at RAF Mildenhall home of the 100th Air Refuelling Wing which fly the Boeing KC-135R Stratotanker, on arriving at to the operations building of the 100th ARW, 351st ARS you are greeted with a large sign displaying the initials NKAWTG-Nobody Kicks Ass Without Tanker Gas.
352nd Special Operations Wing
The 352nd Special Operations Wing based at RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk is an essential part of the United States Air Force Special Operations Command and over the past 3 years has evolved massively. Having stood up in March of this year, the 352nd Special Operations Wing (SOW) is the newest wing within AFSOC which consists of six squadrons. Ashley Wallace flies with the squadrons to report on what the latest platforms bring to the 352nd SOW.
The 2015 edition of the European Air-to-Air Refuelling Training took place at Eindhoven Airbase for two weeks in April and supported Frisian Flag. The emphasis was again to work from a DOB in a multinational environment. It even was more prominent in this year’s training since additionally to last year’s nations (Germany, Italy and the Netherlands) France participated and other nations have send observers to assess a future participation.
NATO E-3A AWACS Operations
Over 3 years of NATO E-3A operations in Afghanistan, in light of ISAF, came to an end when the last E-3A AWACS landed at NATO Air Base Geilenkirchen, Germany on September 25, 2014. It was one of many events for the E-3A Component last year. We visited Geilenkirchen to review 2014 and to look forward to what the future brings for the E-3A Component.
NAS Patuxent River
Located in St Mary’s County, Maryland near the mouth of the Patuxent River, is United States Navy test base Naval Air Station Patuxent River. It is home to the US Naval Test Pilot School and also for various test and evaluation Squadrons. In May 2012 Touchdown Aviation were invited to visit the base and to visit the USNTPS and test Squadrons from the US Navy.
A tribute to RAF Mildenhall Air Fete
With the sad news of RAF Mildenhall’s closure at the beginning of January. I thought it would be a good time to share some memories of their wonderful Air Fetes over the years… I was fortunate to go to all the shows with my late father from the early eighties to its final one in 2001.
