NATO Tiger Meet 2010
From October 4th - 15th the skies over Holland were filled with the tigers roarrr produced by some 50 aircraft participating in the NATO Tiger Meet 2010. 313 Squadron based at RNLAF Volkel was host to this annual exercise organised by the NATO Tiger Association. It was the largest exercise held in the Netherlands in years and attracted lot's of interest in the country and abroad. On October 7th we attended the media day to get some insights on the exercise.
RAF Northolt Night Photoshoot VII
The seventh Northolt night photoshoot was held in perfect weather conditions, unlike the previous one back in March which was held in monsoon conditions upon arrival. This particular photoshoot was very well attended with over two hundred photographers, which will help greatly for funding for the restoration of the Battle of Britain Sextor Operations Room at RAF Northolt, in the Battle's 70th Anniversary year.
50 Years Frecce Tricolori
Celebrating it's 50th year of existence, the Frecce Tricolori gathered almost all European aerobatic team's together at Rivolto Air Base, Italy at the weekend of September 11th and 12th. For the enthusiast of wonderfull formation flying it was the place to be and the Italian Air Force presented themselve with a variaty of displays, not often seen abroad.
Royal International Air Tattoo 2010
The eagerly awaited Royal International Air Tattoo was staged over the weekend of July 17th and 18th and attracted a host of the world’s major Air Arms. The main themes of this year’s show were the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain; Flying Training and the 150th anniversary of the Cadet Force.
Exercise Dutch Blaze
To prepare RNLAF helicopter crew for their future ISAF deployment in Afghanistan, exercise Dutch Blaze was held at different area's in the Netherlands from June 28th till July 9th. Participants were AS532 Cougars from 300 squadron and CH-47D Chinooks from 298 squadron. Touchdown Aviation saw the Chinooks in action at the Beekhuizerzand during 2 evenings.
RAF Waddington International Airshow
Waddington's air show was held over the weekend of the 3rd and 4th July. In the past few years this show has lacked an International feel, but the organisers this year can be highly commended for gathering a wide range of participants from around the globe.
Slovak Air Force
The last decade the Slovak Air Force saw some major changes with the withdrawal of several aircraft types and a restructure of it's organisation as a result of the NATO membership in 2004. From Monday May 24th untill Friday May 28th Touchdown Aviation was guest at Malacky-Kuchyña and Prešov Airbases to witness the current activities of this small Air Force on strength.
Abingdon Air and Country Show
The Abingdon Air & Country Show is a unique combination of an air show with ground events including vintage cars and transport; numerous craft stalls and even a sheepdog display which involved herding geese through a gap in straw bales. Unfortunately, the weather conditions were not the best for an outdoor event with rain clearing in the morning and an overcast sky and windy conditions in the afternoon.
Frisian Flag 2010
The 2010 edition of Frisian Flag, the only European "Flag" excersice, was plaqued by bad luck. First the participating German Luftwaffe F-4Fs were grounded due to problems with the ejection seats. One day later the erupting Eyjafjallajökull volcano spread her ash clouds over the European continent leading to closed airspace in many countries.
RAF Northolt Night Photoshoot VI
The omens were not good as we arrived at RAF Northolt during the middle of a thunder storm, to be met by our host, Mr Phillip Dawe, standing out in torrential rain, checking security and vehicle passes. The purpose of these night time photoshoots is to raise funding for the restoration of the Battle of Britain Sector Operations Room at RAF Northolt. This event was the sixth in a series of photoshoots to raise funds for the restoration project.
Apache Country Middle Wallop
The Army Aviation Centre at Middle Wallop airfield is situated near Stockbridge in Hampshire and is the home of 2 (Training) Regiment; the ground aspect of AAC training and 7 (Training) Regiment, comprising 670 Squadron (Squirrel HT2); 671 Squadron (Gazelle AH1 and Lynx AH7) and 673 (AH) Squadron (Apache AH Mk1) helicopters, plus other attached units.
Fighter Wing Skrydstrup
On January 14, under freezing conditions, Touchdown Aviation were guests with 730 Eskadrille (Squadron) of the Royal Danish Air Force at the sole remaining fighter base in Denmark; Skrydstrup. The base is situated close to the German border in the South of Denmark and is home to 727 and 730 Esk operating the F-16 Fighting Falcon and a detachment of 722 Esk with a EH101 Merlin helicopter for Search and Rescue operations.
