334 Squadron Royal Netherlands Air Force

The most busy unit in the Royal Netherlands Air Force must be the 334 Squadron based at Eindhoven.

With various aircraft types on strength and thereby the various missions to go with it the unit is heavily involved in all kinds of international operations.

Currently, the unit has 5 different aircraft types on strength:

  • KDC-10 both for transport and air refueling tasks.
  • C-130H-30 for transport of wounded and material.
  • Fokker 50 for transport of VIPs
  • F-60 for transport and currently also a maritime role on the Dutch Antilles.
  • Gulfstream for (inter-) continental VIP transports.

In the near future, a DC-10 will be added to the fleet with only a transport task, so the KDC-10's can return more to their air refueling role. Next to that, the first of two 2nd hand C-130's is acquired and will be modified with an all glass cockpit before entering service.

In the past few years, the unit has been flying many missions on behalf of the United Nations. Missions have been flown for the UN missions to Cambodia, the formal Yugoslavian Republic and during the Gulf war. Most recent, a KDC-10 picked up the Tsunami victims from Pukhet, Thailand

From April 1st 2005, 334 Squadron also has a detachment of two modified Fokker 60's at Hato on the Dutch Antilles for Coast Guard duties to replace the P-3C maritime patrol aircraft that are withdrawn from service since January 1st this year. The detachment will last 2 years at most, around that time a civilian contractor must have been found to take over this role.
