Mustang G-HAEC is in fact a license built Mustang by the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation as CA-18 22 c/n CACM-192-1517. In 1951 she was delivered to the Royal Australian Air Force with serial A68-912 being a photo reconnaisance version of the type. She was acquired by Rob Davis of Woodchurch Warbirds in 1997 and continued to fly with him since then. Painted as "Big Beautifull Doll" she represents P-51D 44-72218 coded WZ-I of the United States Army Air Force. She was the assigned Mustang of Lt. Col. John "Firewall, Big Ass" Landers during her time with the 84th Fighter Squadron of the 78th Fighter Group based at Duxford, England. Landers, who had also flown in the Pacific, named all his aircraft "Big Beautifull Doll", was commander of the 78th Fighter Group from February 1945. He scored 14½ victories, 8½ of them while serving with the Eighth Air Force (4½ in Mustangs) and collected a further 20 ground victories. John D. Landers survived the War and passed away on September 12, 1989 at the age of 70. In April 2009 G-HAEC played a role in the new film by George Lucas, "Red Tails", telling the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first all Afro-American unit in the USAF history. She was painted with an all red tail for the duration of the filming in the Czech Republic. At July 10th 2011, only months after she changed owner and was reregistered as D-FBBD, she crashed at Duxford Flying Legends after a mid-air collision with AD-4N Skyraider F-AZDN, the latter surviving the crash as well as both pilots. |
