Grumman TBM-3R Avenger - 53319/RB-319
 

Grumman TBM-3R Avenger HB-RDG was manufactured by the Eastern Aircraft Division of General Motors at the Trenton production line in New Jersey with c/n 3381. She was delivered to the United States Navy on May 17, 1945 with Bureau Number (BuNo) 53319.

She was converted to TBM-3R in 1953 and assigned to VR-22 at NAS Norfolk. Virginia. September 29, 1954 she was stored  before being struck of charge in August 1956. In 1958 she was sold to her first civilian owner, Nevadair Inc. based at Tonopah, Nevada registered as N3966A. In 1972 she was sold to Charlie T. Jensen, also at Tonopah who kept her until 1977. She was then stored for almost 4 years at Sacramento, California until she was acquired by Aero Union at Chico, California where she was stored until 1987.

In 1987 she was found by Anthony Haig Thomas who bought her and wanted her restored to factory fresh condition. This project was undertaken by TBM Aircraft Inc, Holmdell, New Jersey.

In Januari 1989 she was shipped to  the UK and was entered in the UK register as G-BTDP. She made her first flight from Ipswich on January 25 of the same year. She would remain with Thomas and moved to North Weald until she was sold to the Swiss collector Trachsel Charles in 2006. Her new Swiss registry became HB-RDG.

She is still flying in her original marks as 53319/RB-319 named "Charlie's Heavy" assigned to VR-22 in 1953.
